A COLLABORATION IN COLOUR ON KENT’S CREATIVE COAST

I started my career as a teacher of art before being lured into the world of tourism marketing. There I stayed for over twenty years and rarely had time to do anything artistic, apart from on the occasional painting holiday with friends.

Seven years ago I started Escape to Create, a business that organised creative workshops in Whitstable, in artists studios and at the Horsebridge Arts Centre, for locals and visitors to the town.  I also initiated the Kent’s Creative Coast campaign to encourage visitors to be creative in other Kent coastal towns as well as Whitstable.  Through this work I met many wonderful visual artists who inspired me to start painting again. These artists include; Colin Whitaker who runs Art Holidays in Whitstable, (www.artholidayswhitstable.co.uk); Sonia McNally who recently designed and produced an etched glass screen for St Alphege Church in Whitstable (www.soniamcnally.co.uk) and Ashley Hanson, an artist who works in Cornwall but who runs workshops in Canterbury twice a year (www.ashleyhanson.co.uk).

Beach Creative poster.pubJan Lewis was one of the first people to deliver workshops for my Escape to Create breaks and I really loved her work and was really pleased when she suggested a joint exhibition at Beach Creative in Herne Bay (www.beachcreativecic.co.uk) and it certainly motivated me to get painting more regularly!

Jan trained and worked as a graphic designer but with her passion for colour and texture was drawn towards textiles and glass and creates pieces in hand made felt and dichroic glass as well as producing decorative pieces for the home

Our  exhibition brings together Jan’s beautiful textiles and jewellery with my semi abstract paintings in acrylics and oils, many inspired by Jan’s textiles. We hope our shared love of vibrant colours will be clear to anyone who visits our exhibition.

I’ll be  donating 10% of my sales to Trust Sulha, a Whitstable based fundraising organisation that helps educate young Afghan refugees living in Pakistan.

A Collaboration in Colour runs until Tuesday 20th August and coincides with Herne Bay Festival and it would be great  to see you there.
